In the medical school world, international med schools are not a viable path to be able to practice medicine in the U.S. Are international vet schools similar or no? So for example, if somebody attends University of Scotland for vet school, are they easily able to come back and practice in the U.S.? Is there a stigma?

Thanks!

If the school is AVMA accredited they can practice in the United States without having to take any extra tests, just the navle and any state board exams like US grads. If the school is not, there are extra exams involved which I have heard are extremely difficult.

As long as it’s AVMA accredited, then you’re all set. There’s several in Canada, the Caribbean, UK, Australia, and more that are. I’ve worked with great vets from international schools and am actually most likely going to school in the Caribbean. I also have friends that are currently in school in the Caribbean, UK, and Australia. From my experiences, I have not seen really much of a stigma once you’re in the actual workforce. These schools are accredited for a reason. This all being said, it’s important to evaluate all the different factors of going to an international school (tuition, living expenses, travel expenses, living out of the country, etc.). They’re usually costly and the experience is not for everyone, but it is worthwhile to many. I’m looking forward to (most likely) going to school in the Caribbean.

There is no university of Scotland.

There are 2 vet schools in Scotland though and both are AVMA accredited and yes you can attend them and come back to practice vet med in the US.

There is no stigma associated with graduating from an AVMA-accredited school, at least not one that has a decent history of a decade or so (I believe the new vet schools opening up in the US will face some stigma for a while until several graduating classes will prove their worth). There are AVMA accredited vet schools in Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, St. Kitts, Grenada, Mexico, The Netherlands, and France......but not all schools in those countries may be accredited.
