I am currently a P2 student at Wayne State University (Michigan) and many P4s at the school are telling me that they are getting worried about not being able to get jobs at a community pharmacy. Many P4s whom I have talked to still do not have a job which is obviously a concern since they are only a month away from graduating.

Just the other day, I got hired as an intern at CVS. Does this increase my likelihood of landing a job at CVS as a pharmacist in 2 years? I hear that most of the time if you get hired as an intern, that same company will promote you for the pharmacist job. Is this true? Or should I be concerned about not being able to get a job in 2 years?

I know that atleast Walgreens and Target can't just offer you a pharmacist position b/c you were an intern. They open up the position to everyone and anyone.

But, I am sure if you work for them already and they like you it's alot easier.

So people like me who work at an indie are screwed...

I'm an intern with CVS in your area, graduating in 2013. This statement was at the bottom of the intern bio assessment that they ask the P3 interns to fill out: "I understand that this self-assessment is part of an overall evaluation process. Preceptors and Supervisors will also assess my performance and competencies which will determine my eligibility for a pharmacist position upon graduation. I understand not all interns in my graduating class will receive an offer of employment."

Bottom line, it will put you far ahead of anyone not interning with the company because you will know the system. At the same time, you need to work hard to distinguish yourself from the other interns so that you are at the top of the list in case there are more interns than open positions when you graduate. Feel free to PM me if you want to know some ways that I think you can do this. Good luck to you.
