Hi, my girlfriend is a 2nd year DO and trying to make sense of this whole internship requirement thing if you practice in Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia. I've heard rumors that you can practice in these states without doing your internship year IF you do your residency in that state. For example if you did your residency in Michigan you could practice in Michigan without the internship year but not in Florida, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia. Is this true??? Also, I heard that the internship year is required if you want to do an osteopathic residency regardless of which state you want to practice in. Is this true??? I've searched on the Internet for awhile for the answers to these questions and it doesn't seem like there is a lot of good information out there. If someone could point me to a reliable resource that spells out all the rules and possible loop-holes for the osteopathic internship year requirement I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

There are two ways of getting the AOA-approved traditional rotating transitional internship out of the way: 1) just match into a one-year internship 2) match into a linked residency where the first year IS the internship.

There is only one way out of it while still being able to practice in the five states requiring it--become granted AOA approval through Resolution 42. This is technically a "hardship" loophole, but as letters to the editor in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association have discussed, it has become relatively easy to get Resolution 42 approval. For the conclusion of the battle over this topic, read the article at:

This is not true.

Also, to do any AOA fellowship, you must be AOA certified, by having completed that internship.
