Question about interviewing while on rotation

So coming up soon I will spend 8 weeks doing 2 rotations with programs that I am interested in. However I am also receiving lots of invitations to do interviews. I am trying to schedule these around my 2 rotations but my options are running out. Is it bad form to leave one of these rotations to do an interview, or is it something that is expected and very much understood? I'm just a bit nervous because I am very interested in these 2 programs and don't want to mess up. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Just some general thoughts although it's been quite a few years since I did the interviewing thing. I would very tactfully remind folks at your upcoming rotations that you may have interviews to attend. Try to get an idea of what your rotation schedule will be so you do not miss days that may be "more important". If you have a few EMG or spine days scheduled, they shouldn't mind if you miss some of that. If you are working with the program director on the inpatient service for a week, I would obviously try and stick around. I feel "audition" rotations can play a big role in getting exposure and interest in you as an applicant, but it certainly can be good or bad exposure. You really need to be a solid medical student, but also shine while being an exemplary team member. (don't embarrass the resident too much, heh).

So yeah.. remind these programs ahead of time and gently remind them while you're there in a way that is tactful so there are no surprises. The last thing you want is for anyone there to make assumptions that you are anything but stellar and extremely committed during that rotation to increasing your PM&R experience/skills and learning more about their program.

Most programs are very understanding of the interview process. You will see that they often bend over backwards to help students. Saying that, you have to be tactful in your approach. Tell them well in advance, and miss as little time as possible. I wouldn't go over 2 days away from the rotation if at all possible.

And above all, just be honest. If there really is only one time you can make an interview elsewhere (while you're rotating), just tell them; they'll understand. If you're skipping town to hang out with your former frat buddies and lie about it, it'll be found out.
