Ok... I was just wondering if anyone else's school does this. Some of my biology labs are combined with the lecture. So on my transcript it only shows the lecture even though I also took the lab. For these classes I get 4 credits instead of 3. Is this something I need to explain in the explanation statement or is this common at other schools as well?

At my college, the way it shows up on a transcript is for example: Bio I 4, Bio I lab XX . Something like that. Now my Physics class had them separated, 3 hour lecture and 1 hour lab. I think it will be alright.🙂

mine are combined as well. i asked one of the schools about this earlier this summer and they said not to worry about it, they are used to these situations.

All of mine are combined like that - I thought it was strange to have them separated out! But kind of nice, since you could potentially make an A in lab even if yo didn't do as well in the course, right?

Yes! Especially since labs here often didn't count for almost anything, percentile-wise, when they were averaged into the grades... so happy for my As in organic labs, haha.

See if your transcript mentions lab. if it doesn't (ie Bio 101 w/lab A+/4.0 4 credit hours) then consider sending a copy of the class description that mentions the lab to the school. Since all of my science courses included a lab but none of them mentioned it, I did this, and I mentioned that all sciences included a minimum of 1 lab per week in the explanation statement. You could also ask, depending on your school, for a statement from the registrar to be sent with the transcript about this.

When I applied, my labs were combined with my classes. I had 4 credit hours for each, so the 4 credit hours is pretty much self explanatory that a lab was involved. Sooo I did not separate anything. goooood luck 2014 candidates!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. My labs show up combined. It just says Bio 182 4 credits A. It shows nothing about the lab. Some of them are separated but they were still combined with the lecture. The physics labs are separate on the transcript but they counted as 25% of your lecture grade and the lecture grade counted as part of your lab grade. So, even though I would have gotten an A in physics lab since they were combined like that I received a B in physics lab. Otherwise they are either combined on the transcript or they are separate but did not count as part of the other's grade. I think it will be ok. I might mention something about the physics labs in the explanation statement but I think the others will be fine. 🙂

That's interesting. At my school, biology and chemistry labs are completely separate from lectures. Obviously lectures are prereqs for labs, but the classes are not the same and don't need to be taken concurrently. I need to call the schools and make them understand why I've got 3 quarters of lectures but only 2 of labs.
