So on some of apps that asked for my plans for the year, of the many thing I listed, one was about learning a little French before I traveled to France in the spring.

Now, I work a lot, but I have been practicing about an hour a day for the last two months.

The thing is, I can ask and answer basic questions, ask for directions, etc.

I never indicated I was fluent but that I was "teaching myself some".

Will I be expected to speak it fluently at an interview? I heard some interviews include people who speak it fluently. I never said I had prior experience, just that I was learning. Would they really expect perfection? Because I'm worried they'll ask a difficult question I don't recognize and I'm not sure, "Désolé, je ne sais pas, je suis une novice," is going to cut it!

You'll be fine. Don't let the stress get to you. I doubt any interviewer will ask you to speak French unless you harp on it during the interview.

No and no to the bolded. You might get asked a question in French though. I have at least five faculty colleagues who speak French.

So chill.
