Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows the lowest GPA + OAT that someone has, and who got into Optometry school. Like any friends in Opt. or any people currently applying who got in. Is it possible for a 2.9 GPA to get in? with avg. OAT, like 310 and avg. extra curricular activites.

This is just a broad generalization, like at first glance, what would you say?

Depends on the school...some schools use formulas GPA + OAT = some magic number. If your score is higher than the magic number then you may get an interview, if not...no interview for you! Also, your "overall" GPA may not be what they look, some schools look more at your pre-req GPA, or science GPA...again it depents. The lowest GPA of anyone that I personally know is 2.7-ish @ Pacific, I'm not sure what his OAT score was.

A 2.9 is on the lower end, obviously, but it is possible. With a good OAT (330+ maybe) & good extra curriculars, you have a good chance.

Check this thread,

Lowest GPA and OAT combo

My buddy majored in 'extreme partying' 😀 during first 2 years of university and got his act together and got a final GPA of 2.84. (first 2 years GPA of whopping 2.0, last 2 years GPA close to 3.9)

His OAT was unbelievable. Overall 400. I saw his score and his percentile was 99.4%. No candidates with better score and only 0.6% with same score. Wow !!

Interviewed at all schools, waitlisted at few, accepted at PCO.

I hope this helps 👍

i dont' know what's the lowest undergrad gpa in my class. but i do know that there are a couple of folks who had below 3.0, but had an oat score of at least 340. these folks must have had extensive optometric experience and quality extra-curricular activities to help them get to the interview part.

and just to share an awesome motivational story, a classmate of mine who came in with less than 3.0 is now a 4.0 student. well, 3.99 or something. this person only got 1 B out of all our classes so far. just goes to show, if you really want it, you'll work hard for it.

Someone at my university got into NECO with an Avg. GPA of 2.63, so that's the lowest GPA I know of so far. I'm not sure what he got on his OAT though, but it must have been pretty darn high with that GPA. He was a Cogn Sci w/Spec Neurosci. major, so maybe the "hardcore" science classes helped him out. Also my school (UCSD) is pretty competitive in the science majors, so that could have been a factor.

Once again....2.63, so GPA isn't everything. Just improve on OAT and do a lot of optometry related work (intern/volunteer). They want to see that you're dedicated to optometry, and not just another failed med. school applicant. 🙄
