Does anyone know anything good/bad about Marquette? I've read a several contradicting things about the school and am not sure if I want to apply there or not. I've read that faculty isn't so good, students not so nice, etc. but I've also read that the school is great.

What's the deal?? Any Marquette students out there that can elaborate? I just don't want to waste money/time applying if it's not a good school...

I've heard its a great school and have not heard anything bad. It is a private school but they charge less for instate residents (I think this is unique to Marquette). I think that they look at applicants GPA a little more than DAT relative to other schools. I also read that they value hands on dental experience. I would like to hear from a current student...

I am not a current student at Marquette, but I have worked with many of the instructors as a dental hygienist. Since I have decided to go to further my career, I have picked the brains of many of them and this is what I have heard so far:

Most of the instructors have said that the acceptance in the last five years or so has been primarily based on high GPA/DAT scores. In turn, they feel that a lot of their students are book smart, but struggle with the technical skills. Obviously this isn't everyone, but I do know they have held a few people back because their skills are sub-par.

It can be a harsh learning environment if you can't keep pace. Most of the instructors are really hard on you. You really need to be able to thrive in this type of environment. Of course, I know a few instructors that I know would never be that way, but it only takes a few to make it rough!

There is more I could say and could elaborate, but I would be writing a book at this rate! These are the two main reasons I am looking into other options as a Wisconsin resident. Well, and maybe a school that has better weather in the winters too. 😉

Well I am a 4th year at Marquette and I will give you a truthful summary.

Students: The students and their personalities are different from class to class. For the most part, the students here are very nice and easy to get along with. There has never been a time where I have not been able to approach any student and ask a question or get some help. We are a fun group!

Faculty: I do not think the faculty are too hard on the students, or are they unreasonable with their expectations from us in clinic or lectures. There are a few that I could do without but there are students love them...and the other way around. You just have to be open minded with it all.

The school: I have not heard anything about what WiscoRDH is saying about the students lacking technical skills. As a matter of fact, the school does a great job at getting us into the clinic in our first years, and by the time we are ready to do operative on patients the end of our 2nd year, we are not only good with our hands, but we are comfortable with working on a real patient. We start making dentures for patients in the clinic the summer of your 1st year, and there are a great deal of exams and competencies that you must pass in order to advance from year to year.

The main thing to consider is that everyone will have different opinions about things...so don't just hear a few things about a program and base judgment on it until you find out for yourself. You just have to visit the schools you are interested in and see for yourself. I have never heard of anyone that has come to visit Marquette that has not been impressed with our faculty, students, and facilities. I don't regret my decision to come to school here one bit! Hope this helps, and hit me up if you have any other questions.

I don't disagree/agree with anything that has been said so far. However, I have spoken with many dental students from different dental schools and have found that for the most part they like to think they made the right decision about which school to attend. Even if the school sucks, the dental students don't like the idea that they made a mistake in picking their school and almost always say good things about the school. If something negative is pointed out they usually stick with the argument that unless you plan on specializing it doesn't matter. I think that's the mindset you have to have otherwise you'd be hating the school and yourself for picking that school for a full four years. Plus you can't really compare one school to another since most have only attended one dental school.
