So I was looking at the forecast for the beginning of December, and noticed that it's supposed to be snowing in Milwaukee at that time. I quickly came to the conclusion that I'll probably freeze my butt off, seeing as I'll be coming in from California (it was cold today ~65 degrees) and I've been accustomed to great weather every day 😀 . I don't even own a jacket anymore (except for an old ski jacket). Anyway, my ploy was to drive from the airport to the hotel, and then from the hotel to the school in the morning. Is the parking structure very far from the school and is there a covered walkway connecting the two? Will I make it in just my suit or is it too cold to walk that far? I don't want to turn up like a popsicle.

Actually, this thread should be pertinent to everyone applying to anyplace cold, seeing as winter is almost upon us.

The guest parking ramp is very near the building you will enter. It would be smart to have a jacket 😉 but if thats all you are planning to be outside for then you will be fine without.

When in December are you coming? Because they're doing some crazy stuff with our parking structure starting Dec 13th...

The 3rd. A whole bunch of people from SDN will be there on that day. Speaking of the interview day, there is supposed to be a social the night before but my flight doesn't get in until 9 (I think the social starts at 8:30). Is it worth trying to make the tail end of it and how late does it run?

I don't think you would make it in time. When I went, it didn't last too long (maybe an hour, tops).

Was it worth going to in the first place?

It was nice meeting people, but don't feel badly if you can't make it! It wasn't a huge deal, just a chance to meet students and other interviewees. The students are really friendly, so I'm sure you can talk to some the next day (you don't have to get there until noon, so I'd recommend sitting in on a lecture in the morning).

i really liked going. it was short, but afterwards my student host took me out to the bar. there was a group of like 15 of us that went, and it was a lot of fun. are you staying in a hotel or with a host?

oh yeah, to the OP, none of the tour is outside, so you should be fine without a jacket... assuming you can handle the walk from your car to the building.

I was thinking the same thing. Is staying downtown going to put me too far from the school? Where did you stay and how was it?

I stayed with a student host. It was pretty nice, except that she had a cat that randomly pounced on me throughout the night. Lol. I don't think downtown will really be a problem. You have all morning to get there. 👍

I haven't decided yet but most likely a hotel.

yeah, i guess you could just skip the social. it was nice, but short and not essential. also, FYI, if you want to stay with a student host you have to go to the social... at least that's what they told me.

Yes, you "have" to go to the social to meet your host, if for no other reason than that. We usually try to end the social by about 9:10, so a flight that gets in at 9 probably wouldn't make it.

If you have any other questions, send 'em my way!

That's crappy. I did want to meet some students, but I guess I'll have to do it the next day.

Im staying at the radission hotel for an interview on the 3rd. They have a shuttle service that i have arranged to pick me up from the social and drop me off to the interview in the morning. Its really better than paying for a taxi. 👍

I definitely recommend going to the social since you will learn a lot about the school from your student hosts. The social itself doesn't help very much and they feed you lame sandwiches with free soda.
