Hello,

AADSAS calculated my science GPA to be 2.4, and my non science GPA to be 3.3, and my overall to be 2.7.

-My DAT:

AA: 19
TS:20
Bio: 20
Orgo:20
Chem: 21
Reading: 19
Quantitative Reasoning: 17
Percpetual Ability: 17

-I have been accepted into a MS in Oral Biology at NYU and at Rutgers.

Would completing the MS with a high GPA, give me a good shot at getting into a dental school?

Thank You

A lot of people may disagree with me, but I would think about retaking the DAT in addition to doing well in a masters program. Your undergrad GPA leaves a lot to be desired, so you have to compensate for it by being above average in all the other parts of your application to help separate you out from the pack (e.g. >20 in all DAT sections, good research during your MS in oral bio, stellar LORs, etc).

It can be done with a lot of hard work. Good luck!

If you do the MS at NYU, work with Jennifer Gibbs. She's super cool and is doing interesting research in endodontics! 👍 Goodluck in your program. You're definitely going to need to do the masters to be competitive for dschool. Do VERY well. Like 4.0 every term. Show that you're serious.

Does anyone have any other information about the NYU MS in Oral Bio program?! Any success stories?

I did it, and now I'm starting d-school in the Fall 🙂 . Feel free to ask me any questions about it.

How did the program help you to get into dental school?

Would you do it again? Was the investment of time and money worth the NYU MS Oral Degree?

What was the financial aid process like? How will Uncle Sam help us out for folks who already take out postbac loan?

Did you get a chance to take classes alongside the dental students?

What was the impression of NYU's Oral Biology from adcom? MS in Oral Biology sure give me good feeling about my commitment to dentistry. Will the dental school admission committee share the same feeling that I have?

Did you work closely with an advisor in the Oral Track? What was the experience like? LOR request?

I heard UMDNJ dental scholar got a chance to take classes with dental students.

Anyone know if they accept DAT score in lieu of GRE?

Trying to keep this post at the top,

Otherwise known as a "bump." I'm also interesting in knowing some of the answers to your questions as well because I'd like to potentially pursue an MS if this year's cycle isn't kind to me.

Just decided to check some posts here on sdn b/c I haven't been here in a while. To answer some of the questions from this post:
-I went to graduate school with DAT scores- never took the GRE.
-UMDNJ does give students the opportunity to take dental school classes. Some you can just take, like Oral Microbiology and Immunology. You need permission for classes such as Dental Biochem, Physiology, and Dental Histology. The basis for permission= DAT scores and GPA.

Good luck🙂

Thanks. Anyone know what the average "acceptable" DAT score is for acceptance to a masters program?

No DAT minimum for UMDNJ. You're pretty much in if you apply.

Hello all,

As an update, I have now successfully completed the fall semester at Rutgers GSBS and have 11 credits towards my MBS degree. I have already taken Dental Physiology and Oral Microbiology. I have also completed a research rotation in Physiology. At the current point in time, my graduate GPA is a 3.2727...

My DAT remains as follows:

AA: 19
TS:20
Bio: 20
Orgo:20
Chem: 21
Reading: 19
Quantitative Reasoning: 17
Percpetual Ability: 17

My recommendation letters come directly from the teaching doctors from the two dental courses mentioned, as well as from P.h.D's from college.

I am applying to NYU this cycle as well as a few other schools with late deadlines.

I would appreciate some constructive feedback on my current application stats.

Thank You

Let's get OP back in here for some advice on what he would recommend for people to do in a situation similar to his 2 years ago. Looks like he's re-taking the DAT now. Do you think the SMP wasn't worth it? I was thinking about Rutgers since I went there for undergrad but the SMP cost is insane

In my eyes OP is toast. He had a horrible undergrad GPA, ok DAT score (PAT, and quant low), and he barely succeeded in his masters (3.2)...He need to blow that masters out of the park (3.8+) to have a shot. Unless there are extenuating circumstances that I am not aware of it's game over. Sorry to be harsh.
