Hello,

I would like to ask if I have any chance to get interview invites from private dental schools this year.

I am an Asian international deaf student and wonder if they consider me as a minority since I am a deaf.

My Overall GPA: 3.14 (Biology and Anthropology BS major with Chemistry minor)

1st DAT: 16/16/29
2nd DAT: ???? plan to retake soon (late-August or September)

6 biological sciences research project with 2 publications (Vertebrate physiology, Human physiology, and field research in desert)

TA in human anatomy and physiology, over 1000 hrs in dental experiences and volunteering, many extracurricular activities, Lots of awards in Art studio, 4 scholarships, Strong LORs from 2 biology professors, 1 O-chem professor, and 1 community health dentist.

Thank you!

I'd say your shot is good as long as you can get +20 on your DAT. Your GPA is low so you have to make up for it with your DAT. The extracurricular stuff will definitely help only after you meet the minimum numbers they want to see. It's a numbers game and right now you don't have the numbers.

BTW am I reading that correctly?? A 29 on your PAT?? That's crazy. Just go over the academic stuff using textbooks. Try to actually understand concepts. 16 means you seriously don't have a grasp on basic sciences.

Deaf students as minorites...not sure, you might want to call the schools your interested in to find out. Don't think many ppl on this forum (could be wrong) would know the answer to that...

Kill the DAT and you'll definitely have a good shot. 29 is insane on the PAT...if you get 29 again I think ppl on this forum will be demanding a PAT tutorial from you 😉. Good luck! 👍

Thank you for all your answers! 👍

I was so surprised to have a 29 on PAT but was not happy with low AA and TS. I wish to rock 2nd DAT soon.

Regarding my deafness, I can hear a little better only if I am in good condition. Otherwise, I am not able to listen to everybody. So I can communicate with people by reading their lips. 😳

I have profound hearing loss, but I plan on applying for 2010. Happy to know I'm not the only one out there...
I'm not surprised about the high PAT score. When you can't use your hearing, you tend to rely on sight a lot more (lip reading, shapes...etc). I know this is the case for me... I am a very visual learner...
Good luck OnDentalDuty!!!

Hey man, I want to congratulate you for having the determination to pursue a career in such a demanding field. I know that none of us who are able to hear are fully able to comprehend what it has been like for deaf individuals to pursue their dreams, but it is VERY admirable. I took two ASL classes in college, and even joined an ASL club at my school. I loved how tight knit the deaf community was, and how open and helpful they were to anyone interested in their language, so its good to see a deaf person pursue a dental career. I really do hope that you ace the DAT when you retake it so that you will have a chance to accomplish all of your goals. Best of luck to you man

hi Everyone,

I finished to retake my 2nd DAT today. I am so tired right now after 2 hours driving.

My 2nd DAT: 19/20/22 😳

Do I need to retake DAT because of my low GPA? I am going to start my new research project for the 3rd publication this Fall and plan to write a paper of medical anthropology regarding human bite force. 👍
