i know nothing about UM-flint... if you did well, then that's all that matters to most schools. a few schools... Columbia *cough-cough*.. take your school's prestige into consideration. they would have rather you gone to UM-ann arbor...

don't worry about where you went to school..you got your degree and there is nothing you can do anymore about where you got it from.

best of luck to you, jB!🙂

I went to a very good university in Texas that was not University of Texas or Texas A&M (people live and die for those schools). I applied to all three of the Texas dental schools and felt that I was at a disadvantage for going to Texas Tech University (3rd largest school in Texas with about 28,000 people) because TTU.

BUT when I interviewed at the out of state schools they didn't really care. They saw all of my academic achievements and activities and were impressed even though it wasn't the most amazing school. Their biggest question was if I knew Bobby Knight! Anyways, I got into two out of state schools but never got into my state schools.

Hope this information helps!

Who's Bobby Knight?
I couldnt tell you if TTU is good or not. So it really matters in your state.

as long as your school is a 4 year accredited college, they do not really differentiate. im sure it depends on schools, but ive been told by one academic counselor at a dental school that "ivy league GPA, vs state school GPA is just difference between GPA" and that they do not take into account the school.

which is unfortunate, because i coulda went to a state school with the same amount of effort and had a higher gpa

I wouldn't go as far to say that undergrad is unimportant. Although I may have gotten just average grades at my school (top 20), I feel that I am better prepared than most of my peers. The difference lies in the fact that the higher ranked school has a more intelligent student body; thus, the professors must challenge the students more so everyone doesn't get A's. As a result, I have learned to think more analytically and differently than my peers. While they learn to simply plug in numbers to an equation, I have learned to apply the simple concepts that everyone learns to foreign, complicated situations that aren't so cut and dry. Again, I may not receive the best grades, but I feel I am getting a better education. Whether Adcoms recognize this disparity is of little importance to me.

Rice, UT, A&M, SMU, Baylor and TCU are all ranked ahead of Texas Tech in US news rankings. Not saying your accomplishments at Tech were not impressive, but the 3 Texas dental schools were seeing in-state applicants from 6 schools that are better than Tech.
