I was looking at NSU's curriculum and I noticed that starting second year there is a system based approach to learning, such as cardiovasular system, reproductive system, respiratory system, etc. This seems like a relatively new approach to learning medicine. I was wondering what other schools also use this method of teaching, and what are the pro's and con's of this method as compared to a traditional subject based approach to teaching medicine??? Also, i dont see courses such as embryology, histology listed. And there is only one semester of pharmacology, titled, Principles of Pharmacology? Dont most schools have 2 semesters of pharmocology? Thanks for the input...

KCUMB's curriculum is definitely systems based.

most medical schools (osteo and allo) have systems based approached learning starting second year- they have to keep with the standard medical education in the u.s. that said, you just sparkled my curiosity in that nsu doesnt offer embryology and genetics as most med. schools do. i'm interested to know that since i will be starting nsu fall of 2007.

u learn embryo as part of gross anatomy 1st semester of 1st year..and genetics is part of microbio 2nd semester of 1st year..its all integrated...have no fear

yea, as MikeyLu said its all integrated. I'm pretty sure the same thing with pharmacology second year. Histology, however, is a seperate class you take 1st semester M1.

I remember when you got accepted to NOVA DrMikeylu, hope all is well in the sun!

For Pharm:
@ the beginning of your 2nd year you will have a crash course in Pharm and Path Basics. These courses are just an intruductory. With each individual system, you will be lectured on the Pathology, Pharmacology, Clinical, and Surgical aspects of each disease.

I don't particularly like Pharm, but between the intro and the systems as long as you actually LEARN the info provided (not just memorize bare min) you are covered. Students have historically complained that we are weak in Pharm, and that is mainly because it IS POSSIBLE to slack on Pharm during systems. It is up to each individual student to actually learn the drug MOAs and not just memorize the bare minimum to get thru the course.

I personally LOVE the systems approach of second year. I feel as if I am learning AND retaining a lot more than first year.😀

Thanks for all the input!! yeah i was kind of worried when i saw the curriculum. I was like, man, how am i going to pass the boards. So, are all med schools that use the system based approach the same as far as the way they integrate pharm and other subjects into the various systems? Also, what are some of the pros and cons of system based learning as opposed to the traditional subject based approach?

thanks

Good to know this! We just took our biochem final before turkey day and I think I already forgot anything and everything besides PVT TIM HALL.

PS- are you the one on crutches right now?
