Hey everyone,
I know that some schools ask for just submitted papers as well as papers that have already been accepted or published. When listing submitted papers, is there a general rule concerning whether the journal it was submitted to should be listed or not?

Usually i would list them as "in review with X journal" if they have been submitted. I think you should take some care here as it will be many months before interviews and interviewers are likely to ask about what happened to your article. It works out great, of course, if it's been accepted/published. I do not think this is as much a concern for an MD/PhD student applicant, where it's good just to be able to show things in the pipeline, as it is for a fellowship applicant or if you are applying for a grant later on where your ability to convert submitted to accepted will be under greater scrutiny.

Yes. Look at someone's CV. People write down the whole gambit from "manuscript in preparation," "submitted, PNAS," to "accepted, PNAS" etc.
