I have had a few discussions at my school with soon to be perio residents about how they think perio is the best specialty to place implants. They claim since they are the gum specialists, they contour the gingiva to make implants look best. It sounded logical at first, but then I considered reality. First of all, many implant cases are to replace posterior teeth, so really who cares about the gingiva around #30. Then I remembered in the past I've found perio to always be touting themselves, so I am cautious to believe them. Not to be too harsh on perio...For the record, I am coming to understand that perio does some good surgical procedures, and I think they great for people with periodontal dz, so I'm not anti-perio.

The other thing is that I was talking with someone who informed me that implants in a day is being pushed by Nobel towards the GP. The idea is that with the provisional in place on the same day the papilla heals esthetically, rather than potentially blunt edged.

So my question is, doesn't this look like another reason why the periodontists skills with the gingiva won't be necessary in the future for basic implant cases?

Four great sources with answers to all of your questions. Read the articles and you will know more than any of your classmates and probably 90% of the general dentists at your school.

How about this, if you dont contour the gingiva properly get ready for some vertical and horizontal bone loss = loss of implant. If periodonts are better at this then thats great for the patient.

What are they teaching you at your school?

Periodontists are not only about gums ,but all the surrounding tissues around the tooth including bones
