Hey guys, I apologize in advance if this has already been answered, but I had a question about pharm on step 1 I was hoping somebody could help me with. It's probably a dumb question, but whatever.

So basically I decided I should do something for Step 1... I'm not doing much, but I wanted to go through all of the drugs and make anki cards to go through until dedicated starts. Also doing the DIT primer series, but that's beside the point. I can't think of a good way to word this question, but I'm essentially wondering if I need to know the names of all the drugs in FA (I'm sure I do).

For instance, in class I only learned 'donepezil', but FA also has galantamine & rivastigmine as the same MOA & use. Or as another example, the TCA's in class we only learned amitriptyline, but FA has another 6 drugs listed... Not trying to sound lazy, but I'm just wondering if you need to know all the different names or if the first one they list is just most important. I'm hoping that not all of the drugs in FA have a ton of other ones, this damn test is just stressing me out already! Just seems like I need to know 6 extra drugs (for the TCA's alone) if that is case.

Edit--Also is knowing MOA, serious AE's, and use good enough for each of the drugs?

Thanks guys and gals

Yes definitely be familiar with them. I try to make my own little mnemonics and that works pretty well for me. I have done a bunch of questions and can tell you I have seen all of the TCA's covered in FA as answer choices or mentioned in vignettes. The ones in FA are the ones most tested so stick with those. They can obviously test on more obscure ones if they wanted but it isn't worth the extra time IMO. Also, knowing drug interactions is important.

i definitely agree that if its in first aid you should know it but I wouldn't get too worked up about it...the most high yield drugs will come up in questions over and over again and in the vast majority of cases all drugs in the same class (including TCAs) have the same ending or sound really similar so you can group them together that way.
