Hi,
I have a question about unfilled positions post-SOAP which is probably rare. Let's say I receive my ECFMG certification before residency starts and for any circumstance a position opens up (visa issues, etc.) but I did not enter NRMP because awaiting to complete Step 2CK, is it possible to obtain a residency if a spot opens up but I did not enter NRMP? I understand I probably would have to send my entire app to the program but was just wondering if this has ever happened or if anyone knows about this situation?
I'm going to give my CK in a few weeks but I really just want to work asap (preferably IM and location not that much of an issue to me) and not wait another whole entire year. I'm a US-IMG if that matters.
Any responses are appreciated. Thanks

If you look at prior years’ SOAP threads, it seems that very few spots are open and looking to fill once the match/SOAP concludes. I imagine the odds are slim to nonexistent.

More likely than a program not filling in SOAP is a program losing a resident for some reason before July or early in the year. In that situation I believe you would be eligible to apply even if you hadn’t gone through NRMP.
