I am new to SDN and some college friends who are applying to med school recommended this site to me for any questions I may have. I am currently going to my second year of college and am a biology major and going for a minor in physics. I have taken the following courses so far:

Freshman Semester 1:
Organic Chemistry I: 4 credits
English Writing and Composition: 3 credits
Statistics for life sciences: 4 credits
Bio I lecture: 3 credits
Bio I lab: 1 credit
15 credits

Freshman Semester 2:
Calculus II: 4 credits
English Literature: 3 credits
Physics II: 3 credits
Physics II lab: 1 credit
Organic Chemistry II: 4 credits
Biology II lab: 1 credit
16 credits

In the summer I will be taking:
Organic I lab: 1 credit first semester
Organic II lab: 1 credit second semester
2 credits

Sophomore-Fall 2009, I have decided to take:
Bio II lecture: 3 credits
Bio Research: 3 credits
Robotics: 3 credits
Medical Ethics: 3 credits
Biophysics: 3 credits
15 credits

My question is, when I apply to med school, do I need to take general chemistry I and II and physics I? because I was not allowed to choose my own courses freshman year and was put in Organic Chem and I have been exempt from physics I because of AP tests. I did not like AP Chemistry in high school; it was very boring 😴. I certainly do not want to go back and take all of that again. If I need to take these courses please let me know as I can decide and remove 3 of the above classes and add in general chemistry I and physics I. I spoke to my adviser and she does not explain anything to me at all. All she tells me is to follow the course list and take those courses so I can "ga-du-ate on time and find a gud jub."

Thank you.

It depends on the school. I, frankly, hated physics, and got AP credit for both the general physics lectures. So, I'm excluded from applying to certain schools because I won't take physics again.

There are three ways to do this... accept the AP credit and realize that some schools won't give you the time of day, take the AP credit and do additional upper division coursework (which is what you're doing with a physics minor, so no worries there), or retake the general courses.

Schools like SLU won't accept any prereqs that don't have a grade (which they should actually say on their website, instead of something vague like 'AP coursework will generally not be accepted'). Columbia, I know, is similar, as are a few of the Cali schools.

Good luck :luck:

Gen Chem I and II are prerequisites for admission. So, you should take them if you don't have AP chem. If you don't want to, you should take two upper level chem classes.

I do have AP Chem credit but I do not want to take upper level Chem courses. The only chem/bio class I am interested in and need to take is Biochemistry which I do not qualify for until I finish my Bio II lecture requirement. I am thinking about replacing robotics and medical ethics with General Chem I lecture of 4 credits and 1 lab credit. And if I need to complete physics I and lab I too then taking this next semester will take me to 18 credits, which is a lot of classes to balance with work.
