Okay, you only need one semester of upper level bio. with a lab, right? I've taken quantitative cell biology and quantitative physiology. Would either of those count as upper level bio. classes? They were biomedical engineering classes, so it was a lot more equation stuff and not nearly as much memorization stuff as a regular bio. class. I didn't take any labs with them, so I know I would still have to take a lab, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to take the class as well.

Also, I know you need one year of English. Does one semester have to be composition and one have to be literature? My pre-med advisor said that, but I tend not to believe her sometimes. I have taken two semesters of composition classes and don't want to take a literature class unless I have to.

And for humanities/social sciences, do you think 16 credits is enough? That is all that I have to take for my major, and once again I don't want to take more if I don't have to.

Now that I have made myself sound like a lazy piece of $hit, I'm done. 😉

Thanks for any advice!

A lot of schools do not require any semesters of upper-level bio, or they require genetics along with basic bio. It really depends where you are applying. You should look very carefully at your favorite 10 schools' exact requirements. I made the mistake of applying to 2 at which I could not meet the bio reqs.

Schools have very different requirements for English. Some want 2 semesters of comp, 1 each of lit and comp, 2 of lit and 1 of comp, etc.. Again, look at your favorite 10 schools and be sure that you will not get caught scrambling to finish prereqs at the last minute.

OP-
You'll likely find the answers to specific school requirements on their websites; I think you'll find that all schools really do vary on the exact specifics of what they demand. There's a book that the AAMC (www.aamc.org) puts out called an MSAR that may reflect these specifics, too. And the current "common" med school profile books have a lot of this info as well.
Good luck.

I don't know about the science question, but as to the English.. If you have 1 year of English that is all you need. I had Comp I and Comp II, and have never been questioned about it. Maybe I didn't apply to a school that wanted lit as well, though. I think your advisor is incorrect, but call the schools and ask them so you can know for sure.

I have a quick question,
I did Creative Writing and Comp I at my local community college during high school and recieved credit for it at my college now...I ended up with advance standing in college so now I'm a sophmore even though I just started!!! Can these two english classes count for my english requirement...I really dont want to take any more english classes so I really hope they can!
thanks

that is exactly what I had. My classes were through a community college. The prof came to my high school and I got college credit for it. Just include that transcript when you apply and they should count it.

How many credits did you get for your classes. Mine were 3 cedits apiece so I had 6 English credits.

yeah, i guess i just need to look at the specific schools i want to apply to, even though i don't really know which schools those are right now.

i wouldn't mind taking an upper level biology class, but i really don't want to take a lit. class. i think i might put off some of the prereqs until my second semester senior year, so i can just ask in interviews if they're necessary.

thanks for your ideas/advice!
