i didnt replace with anything like that....i would work harder on being more concise and consolodate sentences with the addition of different, more comprehensive vocabulary. There is no reason you wouldnt be able to meet the character count and still produce a good statement. Did you make an outline? if so you can just go back to it and start using that and the sentences you have in your current overlimit essay to build again. Dont try to sound too smart or try to use publication/grant research type language to show your abilities either...this will make your essay go over as well. I could have written my essay the way I myself write and it would have sounded MUCH better and flowed and all that but i had to realize that i had a limit...then when i would simplify one part of the essay and meet the limit, the rest of the essay would sound like an english major wrote it and the that paragraph wouldnt match sounding a little simpler....then id go back and bring down the essay as a whole rather then work on parts of it causing it to be unbalanced...at the end i got a very good one out and did not have to go to using & or numbers to do it either....just think of it this way.....when someone reads the essay, no matter how good it is, seeing an & does not read to them as "and" but instead as a symbol...then they translate it to "and"....they would be reading along and it would just stop them ...it may take away from your essay's overall polish. work harder and i know you can bang one out thats good ...they will never see your original to compare so in a sense YOU know the 500 limit one may not be as good..but thats the only one they ever see so as long as its a good one i think ull be fine...besides...i doubt the difference between a good and great ps isnt what denies you an interview (if there is a distinguishable difference to them anyways)lhkhuu said:

Don't forget the tricks of only one space after a period. You'll be surprised how many characters that will save you. Also, make sure there are no characters at the end of your paragraphs. I would NOT replace words with symbols - that's just tacky and unprofessional. Ask for an English professor's help... or anyone else for that matter. I was almost 400 characters over and my husband helped me cut 520 characters out just by rewording (and it was better when he was done with it).
