The first time I took a science course it was worth 4 credits and I got a D+ in it. I'm retaking it now at a different school and it's worth 5 credits. How does this average into my GPA for both DO school and allopathic schools?

Usually, when you retake an equivalent course across institutions, it counts as a repeat for AACOMAS. What that means is that only the latest repeat counts in the calculation of your GPA. However, since your retake isn't precisely equivalent credit-wise from your original take, I'd definitely call AACOM to ask them how you should treat it and how you should list it on the AACOMAS.

I had the same situation. My retake class was a credit more, but it was the same class at a different institution, so the retake was the grade that was accounted for in my GPA. This is for aacomas, I'm not sure about amcas.

Call them. When I called last year with the same question I was told that the retake needed to be the same credit hours or the two courses would be counted as separate classes--that both would be figured into your GPA. So, like spiced said, give them a call and get a concrete answer. Good luck! 🙂

WHAT?????!!!!!😱 No way!! It's the same freaken course; it's just more hours now and therefore more credit! I refuse to retake this course and have my other lousy grade count!! I'm not applying for a year but still....:scared: I mean each one says 'organic chemistry 1'; and then I'll be taking the 5 credit 'organic chemistry 2.' How confusing can that possibly be for anyone to not realize it's the same course? 😡

Well, I don't make the rules so no reason getting all excited here. As was posted, call them and ask them. I can only tell you what I was told when I called them-and I was told that they would both be counted into my GPA. And yes, the reason I was given is because they were different credit hours, which is why I didn't retake an old BIO course even though I would have liked to 🙁 Anyway, the above poster got a different response when he inquired about it so perhaps I was either told wrong or they have changed their policy--but you won't know until you call 😉

Is it dependent on AACOMAS or the individual schools? I can't call the schools because I don't even know where I'm applying yet, (other than NYCOM) since I'm not applying for a year. Does anyone know how NYCOM calculates?

I have no choose about retaking this course but still I don'tr want my other grade to count. It's bad enough it will count for AMCAS which is one of the reasons i don't expect to be accepted there. Which schools told you both counted?

Why don't you start by finding out how AACOMAS handles the situation, since that is what you are working on now? You first need to know how to list your class on AACOMAS. Call AACOM.

Actually I'm not working on it now. I'm not applying until the next application cycle. However I'm retaking the class now.

Instead of worrying, why not call AACOM and get definitive answer on how you should treat the retake? All of the schools you apply to will see your AACOMAS application. What they do with the data that AACOMAS provides them may differ according to school, but all will see your AACOMAS.

Yikes!! 😱 What class was it?

Yikes? Well since AACOMAS is who calculates the GPA that seemed like a good place to start. When they said they would count both I decided not to retake the course. Each school might handle it differently(I have no idea on that) but since AACOMAS figures the initial GPA and each school will see that, I saw no reason in pursuing it since it wasn't going to have a major impact on my GPA/application anyway. I would have contacted them before retaking anything though, but since you've already started the retake I would call them so you know for when you do apply.

I see. I would still call AACOM and find out; it will alleviate some of your concerns.

Ok, thanks. I guess i was trying to avoid it because it's too late to do anything about it and if what Barts said is true I'm going to be really depressed.🙁 😳
