At my school, most biology labs dont require the "general biology" lab as a prereq and you can take animal, anatomy, phsiology, etc. labs without general bio lab.

I was just wondering...when med schools mention wanting their applicants to have 2 semesters of biology lab (if they want lab at all), is that for general biology lab, or can it be any lab related to bio?

I was just curious because one of my professors is teaching an Animal Biology lab, and I do independent research under him (working with animals, coincidentally) and I'd like to have him as my professor since I know him and the lab relates to my research...would animal bio labs count toward prereqs for med school?

Hands down, take the general bio lab. There may be a few schools that don't accept, but I know a lot of them require "2 semesters of general biology w/ lab," and taking the general bio lab would definitely be better.

Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Take the gen bio labs. Many/most schools also require an upper division bio w/ lab so use the other lab for that req't.

For most schools you'll be OK with the upper div labs (perhaps even better), but just play it safe for the minority.
