I'm an MS1 and I've been interested in pathology for a very long time now due to experiences, etc. Of course I'm going to keep my options open, but that's besides the point. I would like to do some research this summer, however, there are only 2 faculty members of the path department participating in the summer research program at my school. I read their research profiles and they bored me to death. There's no way I'll be able to tolerate that stuff for the entire summer. So far the only interesting profiles are in fields completely unrelated to pathology. Would it look better if I did research in path or does it really matter at all?

I would say it doesn't matter too much. If it were pathology related, it would show that you had a genuine early interest in the field; however, there are other ways that you can show that by the time your apply. Some research of any type would be a positive on your resume. But is the path research that bad?

i believe just about any research project you choose can ultimately be tied to your interest in pathology and the understanding of (molecular) mechanisms of disease.

Department names are, for the most part, just that . . . names. I am doing my research as a student in the Cell Biology department, yet the vast majority of what I study and the techniques I use are more akin to something that would classically be called "Biochemistry." It all overlaps and it's much more important that you have some kind of basic science research experience in any department than it is to have done that research in a lab that is specifically part of the Pathology department.
