Question about retaking classes

Quick question, so I know that when applying to med schools ( allopathic ones) retaking a science class simply gives the average of the two grades. Is this true for humanaties classes as well? I took a history class in high school at a jc and didn't know it was transferable, got a c in it. So I want to know if I retake the class will the first grade still be counted when applying?
