Hi everyone! I just had a hard question that I can't figure out on my own, so I thought - maybe someone here could help me. =)

There's been a family emergency and I have to go back home to DC. Currently, I'm a high school senior and have a great GPA but I only applied to schools in New York because I wanted to stay here. However, I just found out I'm going to need to take a semester or year off from school.

My question is if I apply as a freshman for the six year program to St. John's or LIU a year after graduating high school - would my application be looked down upon?

I have several other questions like if I were to work in a pharmacy either in DC or NY (depending on when I could come back) - would that help my application a bit? Also, if I do come back early, I might do a semester in either a SUNY or CUNY school but St. John's doesn't accept transfers and LIU only accepts transfers for the third year but they're much more competitive on transfers. I would much rather attend St. John's though. Another thing is that my guidance counselor is telling me that I have almost a 100% chance of getting into both if I come in as a freshman and write a letter about what I had to do during my year off school, but that my chances aren't 100% if I were to do the prerequisites at another school and transfer to LIU.

All in all, what should I do? And does anyone have any information or comments about the Pharmacy program at St. John's or LIU?

Thanks! =)

If you've excelled in high school you can excel in college and get into pharmacy school even without the security provided by a six year program. If you have to take a year off, take it off without worrying about it. Besides, taking a year off before going to college seems to be a trend these days...

I took a year off before going to college - not by choice, but by certain circumstances that were beyond my control. I won't go into all that here - but I will say that my time off gave me a lot of perspective on life, and what I wanted to do with mine.
