Hi everyone I just made an account and figured I'd ask here because I was reading the posts and have no idea what half of each discussion is about with all of the abbreviations and whatnot.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone has been accepted, or attempted to apply, to dental school coming from an undergraduate school that does not use a grading system? I'm a student at New College and we have a pass/fail system with evaluations but no actual grades so as far as a gpa and such I do not have any technical grade for a school. I'm a bit worried because after talking to my councilor I was informed that a pass at my school, when demanded by a graduate school, is translated to a 3.0 grade if the graduate school is not willing to accept our pass/fail system. If that is the case then I'll have a 3.0 gpa on graduating and I don't think that is high enough and I have to say after going through the trouble I've been through at my school, which tends to be what I feel is harder than a traditional university due to the fact that there aren't any actual grades, I wonder if I'm doomed?

Thanks so much. Obviously everything is going to come down to the DAT and such scores because that'll be the only true quantitative measurement I will be applying with since all of my evaluations are qualitative literary evaluations from the professors personal opinion of my performance.

When I say harder I don't mean to belittle anyone and maybe I'm completely wrong. I'm just going off of a comparison between my class expectations and those from a nearby state school so maybe not very representative, that is all.

Email schools of interest? Does your school have a pre-dental society or something similar?

No not really. It has a pre-medical club I believe but I don't really see the point in being a part of that. My adviser is the pre-med official sponsor for my school and said she would collaborate with some other teachers to write a letter explaining my performance compared to other students when I applied just so when I apply the schools can see sort of how I stacked up to other students in similar classes at my school but that's about i.

Well the point of joining the club (or auditing) would be to ask about how they're going about applying to medical schools with a P/F system.

You need letter grades, no doubt. So get on that before it is too late

Do you have any actual facts to support this or are you just going off of your own observations/opinions? I know students have gone to med school from my school with no issues but I o know med school and dental school are 2 different beasts. There really is no going about getting grades at this point. I'm a 3rd year biochemistry student so I've basically done all of my requirements and upper level courses except for a few labs, the second semester of biochemistry and cell bio.

You're not going to get any certain answers from anyone on this forum unless they're on a school's admissions committee. Just email the schools you're interested in and ask. Won't take much time and you'll get better answers. If you're not sure which schools you will be applying to, at least ask the schools in your own state.

I have heard of your school, and it's decently well regarded correct? UF and Nova should be familiar with your schools grading system so calling their admissions office would be a good start.

Ok I'll start that soon then. Thanks=)

I believe it is. It gets mentioned a lot in princeton reviews and similar entities mention it. It is the honors school of florida but dunno that means anything to anyone lol. Alright thanks for your help ^^
