Just curious as to how the whole process of specializing in dental school works. I know you have to be around the top of your class and perform very well on your board exams. But is there an application type of process? Do you need letters of recommendation? When and how do you find out if you've been accepted into a specialist program? ect.

Like you said, do well in school and on the boards. It doesn't hurt to buy lots of chapstick either for all of the a$$es you could kiss.😉

typically you'll need 3 letters of recommendation. you start gathering your application materials the summer after junior year. you'll need a CV and a personal statement. some programs will ask for additional essays. interviews are in the Fall of senior year. Match, I believe, is some time in january (except for ortho which i think is in december?). some specialties don't participate in Match (i believe that would be prosth, endo, perio?). Match works pretty much the same way as it does for your buddies in medical school.
