long time lurker first time poster, think i posted this in international, but dont seem to get any replies, hope i get better luck in the residency forum.

i understand its essential to be ECFMG certified by Sept 1 of the year before the match, if one is fresh out of medschool and say did step 1 when in medschool and did step 2 CK while in medschool aswell, when can one do step 2 CS in order to be certified by september 1st? would it be hinder with some of the final year rotations? or can it be done in early summer? around june?

and as well as that when should someone take Step 3 in order to be eligable for H1-B visa? does the result have to be available by the time of the interview?

how are irish schools regarded during the match? i understand most programs regard all IMGs as equal, but are some more "equal" then others?

to be ecfmg certified you need to have graduated from medical school and need to send a copy of your med school diploma to ecfmg, you can take step2cs whenever you want, the basic physical exam stuff you learned during basic sciences or your 3rd year core rotations is all you need to know to pass. Don't know about Irish schools but for carib schools most residency programs don't require you to be ecfmg certified to apply and match into residency you just have to be ecfmg certified before starting your residency. and i don't know the answeres to your other questions you should talk to your upperclassman friends or your school should put out a list of how many students match in the US each year.

You have to take CS in the US. Whether it "hinders your final year rotations" depends on your schedule and ability to travel to the US for the exam. It can be done whenever you choose - if you are graduating and wish to be ECFMG certified by September 1 (I don't know about it being "essential" except at those programs that require it), then I would agree that completion of exams by June would be "safe" in terms of getting the certificate by September.

The answer to your question is that it varies from program to program. Please read the stickied thread in the International Forum (if you have not already) where aPD talks about the different types of Visas. He suggests taking Step 3 before applying for programs if you are going to try for an H1-B.

Depends. Some residency programs are familiar with grads of certain schools and may give them preference, but in the end where you went to medical school will fall far behind other factors in residency decision.
