Question about SUNY!

Hi, I just find out that you SUNY look at high school transcript in order to go to this pre-optometry program...7 years...but what about 4 years in undergraduate and then go to SUNY? do I have to give them high school transcript too?? aw...cause my grades aren't that great right now...:/ I am junior, but I know that I am increasing...but...yeah...so can you guys tell me what SUNY's high school prospectives are? like GPA and SAT? thanks! 🙂

Anyways, they ask for it when you apply the traditional route as well. They also want SAT scores. I don't know why they want it, and I can't really see them put much emphasis on it since it was 4 years ago. For most people, who you are ages 13-17 is vastly different from who you are 18-22.

Definitely just worry about doing well in college...I don't think they release high school GPA/SAT scores, all the schools only report on college GPA and the optometry admissions test
As always, you can call the admissions office and ask them directly if you're really interested

Who would they release it to?


I agree, you just need to do well enough in HS to get into college. Although it doesn't hurt to challenge yourself now in HS to build good habits in college.

It is true that if you apply to SUNY's pre-optometry program with an affiliated school, they ask for your highschool transcript and GPA. I believe this has more to do with the undergrad affiliation rather than SUNY optometry themselves. They will deal with you when you are in your second or 3rd year in good standing, and time is coming for the interview...

but answering your question, yes, you can apply the conventional way, which is go to a 4 year college for an intended bachelors, then applying to optometry school.

I believe some of the optometry schools DO ask for your HIGHSCHOOL transcript and SAT scores, however most likely they will not be weighted as heavily as your college GPA and OAT scores + extra activities.

SUNY is one of the schools that requires high school transcripts and SAT scores for regular admissions (not just for the 7 year program), but I'm sure you're right about it not having much weight.

The combination of my high school transcript (which exposed my relatively low GPA) and SAT scores (which were what got me into the undergrad I wanted to go to) very clearly showed:
a) that I was not interested in the sciences until I reached college,
b) that I did not care at all about my grades in high school, and
c) that I had a very different career path in mind at the time.

As far as I know, it did not hurt me a bit. I wasn't asked a thing about high school during my interview (and why should I have been--my life, interests and maturity level have drastically changed since then).

They won't see your transcript until you apply, which is USUALLY at the beginning of your senior year (if you're not taking time off after graduation). If Pace is one of the schools that participates in the 7 year program, you will apply at the beginning of your junior year. They will consider trends throughout your entire college career, and will want to see improvements throughout. My guess is that the semesters more recent to the time you apply are most important... but that doesn't mean you should slack at the beginning. If you don't have a good handle of the basic concepts from your lower division classes, you'll be hurting when you get to the upper level courses.

And about the salary question...like others have said, "it depends". Usually on location and the years of experience in practice, rather than the school they graduated from. From opted.org: "According to the 2007 American Optometric Association Economic Survey, the average net income for optometrists was $175,329." But I'd look at that figure with A LOT of scrutiny and take it with a grain of salt.
