If I don't do an osteopathic internship does that preclude me from matching into an ACGME residency program in the 5 special states?

The reason I ask is that it seems that in order to progress beyond the intern year a state license is required which cannot be issued to a DO without an AOA approved internship in these 5 states.

In Michigan you have to complete an AOA intern year before you can progress to your pgy-2 year. In the other 4 states you could complete your residency, but would not be eligible to practice on your OWN license (vs your training license) until you have completed an AOA internship or had your internship approved. This info is current as of about this time last year - I don't know if anything has changed in the last year.

Now for my own personal rant.....

I know that last year the U of Mich anesthesiology dept couldn't match DO's through the match because they only had categorical spots in the match and that is the reason. They do have some out of match spots they will interview you for. They tried to get their intern year approved but the AOA were a bunch of jerks and evidently it costs a truckload more than ACGME certification. No bitterness here!

Good luck
