I wanted to walk through the timeline of applying, interviews, and acceptances so that there are no surprises when the application opens.

My questions are in bold, any info (even partial) would be really helpful.

June 1: Application Opens

  • Fill in your information, personal statement, institutions attended, grades, professional experience, etc
  • Select the dental schools you want to apply to
  • Print out "Transcript Verifications Request Form" from the Institutions you've attended tab (if you've been to more than 1 school, you need more than 1 form)
  • Have your letter writers or committee send your LORs to AADSAS
-Will I be given an address to ask my letter service/letter writers to sent to?

  • Go to each school you attended and request them to send AADSAS a transcript

-How will I know when the grades I entered onto the application have been verified?

-Will I know when the transcript has been received?

-Will I be able to see the AADSAS GPA that ADCOMS will see?

  • E-submit and pay the application fee

After You Apply: ??????

-How will I be contacted for supplemental applications?

-How long after a person applies do they typically receive supplementals?
(i know it differs by schools, just wondering if it's days, weeks, or months)

-Will I have to dedicate a lot of time to supplementals?

Interview: ????

-How will I be contacted to set up an interview?

-Assuming I apply early, do I want an early interview or does it not matter?

-How many weeks are there usually between scheduling the interview and actually going?

Acceptance: December 1?

-I've heard the "Dec 1" date thrown around a lot, does that mean that all of the first round acceptances are given on December 1?

-Is no one admitted before then?

-How are acceptances given out (phone, mail, e-mail, AADSAS)?

-THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT- How will I know if I've been rejected to the schools that I've gotten interviews or supplementals from or the ones that I haven't heard from since they acknowledged they received my application?

Yes

You get an email or you could check AADSAS everyday if you wanted.

-Will I know when the transcript has been received?

Yes, I think they email you from what I remember.

-Will I be able to see the AADSAS GPA that ADCOMS will see?

Yes

-How will I be contacted for supplemental applications?

Depends on the school. Some do it a couple days after you submit AADSAS, others take a couple weeks.

-How long after a person applies do they typically receive supplementals?
You just answered your own question. Could be days, weeks, or months depending on the school. There's no set answer for them.

-Will I have to dedicate a lot of time to supplementals?

Depends on the school again. Some are just questionnaire type things. Others want short answers/essays.

-How will I be contacted to set up an interview?

Email, sometimes phone call. Mostly email though.

-Assuming I apply early, do I want an early interview or does it not matter?

Yes. Early is always better for everything.

-How many weeks are there usually between scheduling the interview and actually going?

Generally about two weeks. But some schools notify you a couple days ahead. Others tell you a few weeks. It really depends on the school again.

-I've heard the "Dec 1" date thrown around a lot, does that mean that all of the first round acceptances are given on December 1?

Dec. 1 is the earliest anyone can receive an acceptance. It's also when most of the acceptances come out. Dec. 1 is a big day for predents.

-Is no one admitted before then?

Correct

-How are acceptances given out (phone, mail, e-mail, AADSAS)?

Generally, email or maybe phone call. Maybe both. Mail is pretty rare unless you missed the phone call or email. Schools like telling you right away. You do usually get a packet of information later about deposits and stuff.
-THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT- How will I know if I've been rejected to the schools that I've gotten interviews or supplementals from or the ones that I haven't heard from since they acknowledged they received my application?

They send you a rejection letter/email. It's pretty straightforward. If you haven't heard one yet, then you're still under consideration.

just so you know, some schools ask everyone to submit supplemental applications (and the corresponding fees). i didn't realize this until one of the schools emailed to remind me to submit the secondary and then i noticed that it was pretty clearly written that i was supposed to have done that earlier. 😱

-a couple days??? what if the state is really far, do we have enough time to drive there or people usually get plane tickets, I have to really start saving some money :scared:

I've only seen a couple instances where it was a couple days ahead and most of the time it was for the local state school. For example, Houston notified me 5 days ahead but it's only a few hours from where I live so no big deal.

Some schools are also pretty flexible with their dates and give you several to choose from. Generally, school's are considerate about traveling and dates. No one's expecting you to show up in 2 days for an interview.

And yes, it would be a good idea to start saving up ASAP. Applications + secondary fees + airplane tickets + hotel costs = alot of money down the drain before you're even a dental student.

AwesomeTeeth pretty much covered all answers.

The only thing I'd like to elaborate a little on is Orbitz.com (or any other flight+hotel agent). You can get great rates assuming you have at least 3-4 weeks notification before the interview.

Look guys, most interviews take place in the same time people are doing a Fall semester. Schools understand you have obligations (studying for exams, homeworks, papers to turn in, etc etc). They normal don't contact you and give you a short time to schedule. They'll give you a good heads up (minimum 2-3 weeks). Heck my Nova interview was schedule for late October and it was August when I got the invitation 😱 (3+ months worth of notification)

I actually have a question to add to this thread:

Do you have to SUBMIT your application in order for them to verify your grades or do they verify before you submit?

If anyone who applied last year can confirm that their grades were verified before they submitted their app I'd really appreciate it.

You have to submit for them to verify.

I didn't submit UNTIL my transcripts and LORs arrived (like 2 weeks after AADSAS opened up)... Don't ask me why I did that lol... I thought they would get confused to see an application ready to go without transcripts and LORs.

Anyways, I don't remember the details exactly, but if memory serves, they DID verify my grades after my transcripts arrived BEFORE I hit the submit.

You can always call AADSAS to verify this.
