Question about Transtional/Prelim

Hey everyone,

I couldn't find this info in the FAQ or searching, I was wondering if there are specific requirements needed in a transtional or prelim year (i.e. 3 months ICU) to continue onto being a first year anesthesiology resident?

It's on the ACGME website, there are requirements for anesthesiology overall and for the CBY. I think the numbers are something like:
6 months of inpatient
1-2 months of ICU (no more than 2 can count toward your required 6 over the 4 years)
1-2 months of EM

As you can see there isn't much advantage to doing a transitional for the anesthesia people...unless you somehow score a cush "inpatient" rotation that doesn't involve q4-6 call...

Interesting... I didn't think there was a "requirement" for an EM rotation. I don't remember there being one in the CBY at U of Michigan, instead I thought they had a month of research. I wouldn't think you could do this if EM was required (someone correct me if I'm wrong)... 😕

New Anesthesiology Requirements – 7/1/08 from the RRC President Dr. Lois L. Bready, M.D. (UTHSC San Antonio)

New requirements strictly applied to:
* 7/08 beginning PGY1 residents – yes
* 7/08 beginning CA-1 residents – no

All PGY-1 residents must have:
* 6 months of inpatient care including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, surgical specialties, OB/Gyn, Neurology, Family Medicine or a combination
* 1 -2 months of emergency medicine and critical care medicine
* May have up to 1 month of anesthesiology

CA-1 – CA-3 Years
* Minimum of 2, 1-month rotations in peds, cardiac, neuro, and OB anesthesia
* 4 months of CCM – up to 2 months in PGY-1; take in at least one month intervals
* 3 months of PM – up to 1 month in PGY-1; taken in at least one month intervals
* 1 month of perioperative medicine; taken in at least one week intervals

Elective Experiences
* 6 mo of elective time
* Can be used to finish all required PGY-1 experiences for residents who transfer from other specialties
* Research
* Advanced anesthesia rotations
* Other activities related broadly to perioperative medicine

The ED rotation is "suggested" not required. take that to mean what you will, but from what I can tell it will depend on how your new PD reads that statement. Most programs are asking for a month of ED

OP -

I was unaware of the "suggested" EM month; I'd been operating under the assumption that an EM month was mandatory. So, if you've still got a question on this, I'd:

1) Be sure your TY and Prelim years have the option for electives, and strongly consider making one of those electives an EM experience
2) Contact your top anesthesia programs and see what they require out of an intern year - one program I was at was pretty stong in saying that they really wanted all interns to have a pain management experience, for example.
