Hey:

I was windering if we do a clinical rotation after second year of medical school and just before starting full time in a lab for our research thesis. Cornell MSTP site talks about something "Introduction to Medicine clerkship". Is it the same thing? Well, if we are doing a clinical rotation before PhD, then it is very cool. Do you guys know in which other schools it is like that?

I know at least in my school(U of M),there is no clinical rotation before thesis research.

Another thing:
Years 3,4,5,6:
"Students are encouraged to take optional clinical electives, which are designed to strengthen the ties between the basic research and clinical problems."

So, how realistic is this? I would love to take clinical electives but then how I will finish my thesis research. Do you guys have any insight about this clincial electives during the thesis research.

thanks in advance.

The program structure has just been changed (applies to current second years) so that after the boards, students will do one clinical rotation of their choosing prior to their 3rd lab rotation/phd.
You know, I think that's a really good thing. And I think MSTPs will benefit from doing an internal medicine rotation before the research phase begins. I think this should be instituted at Michigan too. Since 4th year is short and pretty much a joke at MSTP programs, this would enable an MSTP program to condense the clinical training (the MD portion) to a mere 3 years.

Doing an internal medicine rotation AFTER your clinical research is very difficult especially if you want to do well (i.e., you are planning on doing a short track internal medicine residency at a prestigious program). It really is a disservice to the MSTP fellow to play catch-up during internal medicine 3, 4, or 5 years after you learned your clinically-relevant material during your 2nd (and maybe part of 1st) year of medical school.

apparently this change is not policy yet.
