(1) How do you find out if your area is underserved? I believe my area is, but I want to confirm it. How does one do that? Online database? Did AAMC submit one?

(2) Can you have an area NOT underserved, but still have a population within the area that are underserved?

1) Enter a state and county. A box will pop up that says whether the area is medically underserved. MUA Find

2) Yes.

It is surprising how one letter can change the meaning so profoundly!
And yet, I will see this mistake a dozen more times in the coming months...

Alternatively, after you've gone into the AMCAS application and filled out your place of birth, permanent and preferred address, go back to the Main Menu, select Print Application, and the resulting PDF will show a (U) after the name of the cities if they are considered "Underserved."

😳 Note: Applicants, make sure you don't spell 'underserved' as 'undeserved', check your writing as it is super easy to miss.

Thank you so much, this is excellent!! It is indeed an underserved area.

Sorry to jump on this thread, but if the "U" appears only on the county of residence and not city, am I still in an underserved area? Certain parts of my county are definitely tougher than others, but not sure if mine qualifies as MUA.

Maybe, maybe not. If you look below at the details (see link in post #2), it should name the areas of the county which are underserved. To see an example of what I mean, input State: California, County : Los Angeles, and you'll see they are specific about what regions are underserved.
