Hi all,

I am submitting my AMCAS application tomorrow (late, I know). I've heard that AMCAS is taking up to 8 weeks to verify, and if this is the case, it will most likely not be verified until after the Nov. 1st deadline for a lot of schools. My questions is if I'm interpreting the process wrong. When the school says Nov. 1st is the deadline for AMCAS submission, does that mean that it has to be submitted by Nov. 1st or verified by Nov. 1st, or are the two synonymous.

Thanks and good luck everyone!

It has to be submitted by Nov 1.

okay, so just to make sure, it does not have to be verified by nov. 1st?

thanks!

Something to keep in mind: Schools also have secondary deadlines. While you may meet the primary deadline, if verification takes too long you could still miss the secondary deadline. I would recommend not adding any schools until you've been verified, so that way you don't run the risk of wasting money on primary fees for schools you can't apply to. In the meantime, pre-write your secondaries.

Okay, one more question.

I have two letters of rec submitted to AMCAS, both from science teachers. Most of the med schools I am applying to require at least two from science teachers, and one from the pre-med advisory committee. Unfortunately, mine does not meet until mid-September. Should I ask another professor for a letter of rec or go ahead and submit my application and wait for the committee to submit the letter later?

You can submit without having all your letters in. I submitted in July and got verified early August, my letter didn't come in until mid August from my school. That just meant that I wasn't complete at the various schools before my letter came in, but verification can still go through just fine.

if my application is verified without a committee letter in, will I still get secondaries?

Yes, at least some of them. I applied to 17 schools, got 4 secondaries pre-verification, 9 secondaries after verification, and another 4 after my letter came in (but I don' t know if the letter was the thing that caused these secondaries to come in).

Wait, I thought schools did not get anything until your application is verified? Or can they see that you have applied but don't have the rest of the app? 😕

Schools receive preliminary information (like your contact info) as soon as you hit submit. Some schools send secondaries as soon as you submit, some schools send secondaries as soon as you are verified, and some schools wait until your entire primary application is complete. Although you are applying late, I think AMCAS is making decent pace, and (correct me if I'm wrong sdn) i think that the later in the app cycle we get, the less people there are submitting apps. So they won't be working at the same pace....say 3 weeks from now.

I do second someone's comment about waiting until you are verified to add on more schools.
