After doing some research on these forums, it seems as though shadowing experience for Pre-Pharm students is slightly more difficult compared to other fields due to liability and legal issues with retail pharmacies, etc. And also some states requiring certification for Pharm Tech positions.

So I'm wondering for Pre-Pharm students, is volunteering in hospitals/health-related areas (even if not in the pharmacy department) sufficient to replace "shadowing a pharmacist" usually?

Do Pharmacy School Adcoms take the difficulty of shadowing a pharmacist (due to legal and liability issues) AND getting Pharmacy Technician positions into consideration when reviewing an applicant's resume?

It isnt that difficult. Try independents for retail. Go to your local college of pharmacy and try to find someone to set you up with hospital or toxicology or nuclear. For pre pharms where I was we talked to the interim associate dean and she loved doing this.

If you want to volunteer in a hospital setting, ask a clinical pharmacist or an inpatient staff pharmacist.

If you want to do some shadowing, ask pharmacists at independent pharmacies. You could also try outpatient pharmacies in hospitals.

Chains usually say something like, "we'll have to train you like we're going to hire you," which means you'd have to sit through and learn company policies and about HIPAA before you can shadow in retail.
