Sorry if this has been answered already, but I just got my ERAS token a few days ago...what's this about "certifying" your app?

Some of the residency programs have started accepting apps already. Should I hurry and get my personal statement, CV, etc. in, or am I supposed to wait for all my letters first? I only have 2 letters so far anyway, was planning on getting 2-3 more during my Sub-Is and away electives this fall. 😱

Yeah, what you talkin' bout, Willis.

"certifying" is where you approve the app and it is sent - no further changes can be made.

This only applies to the common application file, and it must be "certified" before it will be sent to programs. As I have stated before, the CAF is the only thing you need to have completed to apply. The other bits can be added later.

Hi guys,
So when do we certify the application and send it to the post office. Is that now or in September? Can someone please enlighten us to the ERAs process in a quick and easy format, you know ERAs for Dummies with a timeline. That would be so great. Such as: Now--> answer application questions September 2--> Certify app and send to post office, then available to programs for review. Is this accurate or what?
Thanks for any info,
Doc_thks_JC

Weird, I just got freaked out last night while looking through FREIDA...some of the programs start accepting apps on July 1st? Weird.

So do we need to get all our letters of recommendation by Sep 2?

My office of student affairs told me no program in the match can recieve apps before sep 2. Good point on the need to have LOR's in by that day. ANy ideas?

Sigh. Here it is again. Make lots of links to this post and place them in prominent places on SDN, your school's bathrooms, the lockers, the anatomy lab - everywhere.

ERAS is nice because it can be done in bits and pieces. The only thing you need to have completed to "apply" is the CAF. Once that is completed you can submit your application to the programs you are interested in and PD's will see it. Last year I know many students interested in Peds, IM, FP got interviews with nothing more than this and their USMLE scores sent to programs. The earliest you can certify the CAF and submit it is Sept. 2.

After you have submitted the CAF the other pieces can be sent one by one as you complete them. The way it works is that programs have computer software that constantly updates your file for them from the ERAS database(by constantly I mean 1-2x per month). Usually you have to have all your material (LOR's, Scores, Statement) in by the program deadline which is usually about Nov. 1-2 when Dean's letters come out.

It is possible to send different Statements to every program, and different letters to every program, or the same ones to all of them. It is possible to send one statement, retract it, and send a different one. Same for letters. So overall the system is pretty flexible.

So to answer your question directly, in competitive programs (Rads, Anes, EM, Cat Surg) I would say people generally have their CAF ready to go on Sept. 2 so that "their name is on the list." The rest of the material follows during Sept. and hopefully is complete by early Oct. You can usually add letters right up to the programs' deadlines. Sometimes the first time they will see a complete file is on your interview day, but they generally don't expect a complete file until Nov. 2.

Seaglass, thanks for the extremely helpful post. That really helps clear things up for us confused folk. 🙂

I'll get working on that personal statement then!

For those who haven't done it, I would recomend reading the 'Steps in the ERAS Process' link on this page:

http://www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm

The only way to get all of your application questions answered is to become a temporary 'expert' in the ERAS process and timeline. It is a real pain and somewhat time consuming to read everything, but once you do then the process seems a little more organized and intuitive.

I don't envy you guys going through this. Good luck with everything.

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but how long do the personal statements have to be? According to the ERAS faq, the length of the PS depends on the individual residency programs...

Front of one page max. IIRC the font they print out in is Courier New if you want to check it.

🙂 Hey guys, does anyone know what the margins are on the pages the PDs print? I can't seem to find this info anywhere. IE how do I know that my PS is not over one page? Thanks!

Also, are you guys and gals including your clerkship honor and near honors etc as awards? Thanks! 🙂

At my school, "honors" was a GRADE, not an award.

Really?? One of my deans told me up to 5 pages will fit for the personal statement, and if it's an interesting read, it'll be read. (the main issue with length is that if its boring, they might not read the whole thing, according to him).

hmm.

I wonder if it'll be too late to send in step 2 scores after 11/2. I had my test date planned so i'd get my scores in my end october, but now that the new step 2 testing format is causing score reporting delays it might be delayed by an additional 3-4 weeks.

Will ERAS still retransmit scores after 11/2?

yes. they'll do it until ERAS closes after the match.

Is it possible to still add programs to your list once you have submitted your CAF on sept 1? I ask because it would be nice to have the capability in case you are not getting enough interviews.

From the application process guideline - step 12:

You may apply to additional programs at any time. Use the Program Search and Selection to make additional selections just as you did previously and do not forget to make your document assignments before you transmit the applications.

cool. will the step 2 score still be helpful, though, in terms of getting me interviews (on the off chance that i rock it) after 11/2?
