I was wondering are dschool applicants, who plan to apply for the wiche program, considered an in state applicant even though they haven't actually been accepted into the wiche program? Does stating that you are applying for wiche give any benefit when the adcoms look at your app?

I am attending the UW this fall and this is what I found on their website:

The University of Washington participates in the program administered by WICHE for students who reside in western states not served by a dental school (Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming). Such students should seek REQUEST FOR CERTIFICATION from the WICHE commission office in their state of residence. Students who enroll in the School under the WICHE program pay in-state tuition, the nonresident portion being paid by the member state sponsoring the student.

From what I understand, I think you have to get your certification before you apply but it probably doesn't hurt to give your schools of interest a call.

From what I've been told by Montana's certifying officer, WHICHE applicants should be put into a seperate catagory as WHICHE canidates. From my experience so far, I don't think that it really helps your chances of getting into a school, although it seems like it should. This makes getting into school from a state that doesn't have a dental school more difficult.

As far as getting certified as a WHICHE applicant, you send an aplication to your state certifying officer. Once certified as a resident you are put into a pool that could possibly get WHICHE funding from your state. Then when you are accepted to a school, they decide if you will get the WHICHE funding from your state.

The Wiche officer in hawaii told me that I would have to wait till july to apply to the program. She wasn't very clear when I asked her if I would be considered an in state applicant should I apply to UW. But yeah she did tell me that they put the application in a different pile.

Last year I was accepted to UW and I'm almost 100% sure it was because I was WICHE certified. As far as I know they accept a very low # of out-of-state applicants that's why I'm assuming I got in. Also I was told by a couple of other schools including UNLV and Colorado that you have a better shot at getting in if you are a WICHE applicant. Good luck!

I understand your point of view. I am from Arizona and have family here, I also have children so I didn't want to move them clear across the US. So decided to stay here since I plan to practice here. Fortunately I obtained WICHE funding so I can attend ASDOH. Also, when I got the call first thing in the AM from UW on Dec. 1st I wasn't told I was accepted as a WICHE applicant, I just assumed that's why I was accepted, only an assumption, but I don't know not for sure.

When I was invited for an interview at Colorado, the title of the e-mail said "WICHE interview". A few of the other people at my school also were invited due to there participation in WICHE. I did not say anything in my application that I was WICHE, so I was invited after I was certified. A couple of people at my school stated that they applied to be WICHE certified somewhere in their application and were invited to an interview early in the cycle. Two of them got in and that is where they are going. So the moral of the story is state that you are WICHE somewhere in your application so you will have a better chance at getting an interview early at places like UW and Colorado.

I sent a copy of my WHICHE certification letter to all of the schools that I applied to. I don't know that it helped, but figured that it couldn't hurt.

How does being a WHICHE applicant help your application? I don't really see what schools participating in the WHICHE program would gain from accepting WHICHE applicants. The school still gets the out-of-state tuition cost out of WHICHE students.
