are the hours as an EM doc completely random and at any possible time? is it common or even heard of that an EM doc works 2 days a week, for 2 24 hour shifts?

Random? Yep?

Any possible time? Of course. Someone has to work.

24 hour shifts are more common in rural areas with low volume. They aren't that common, but are certainly out there.

(In-N-Out being the exception, being that it's a level -1 trauma center, and all the docs there are god-like.)

I heard god use to speak at grand rounds but wasn't ask back since their PD thought his material was out dated.

But, like most things in medicine it depends. Some place that are really busy the attendings only do 8s or 10s. Some groups rotate between 8s, 10s, and 12s. I'm sure there is a plethora of options out there.

Do you know what a plethora eeez? You told me we have a plethora of options... and I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora and find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.

during residency you will probably work in the ballpark of 60-65 hours/week. after residency it really depends on you and whether you want to work full time vs. part time, etc. residency lasts 3-4 years.

i'm an intern, and i work ten 12 hour shifts/2 weeks plus 10 hours of conference/2 weeks (we're based on 2 week blocks). next year that will drop to nine 12 hour shifts/2 weeks plus 10 hours of conference/2 weeks at one of our hospitals and remain ten 12s/2 weeks plus conference at the other one.

the number of shifts/block drops each subsequent year.

the hours are not 'random' because the scheduler tries to put you on a series of days or nights to minimize messing with your circadian rhythm.

for example. next block i'll be working noon-midnight wed, and 7pm-7am thurs-sun x 2 weeks. so i'll pretty much be nocturnal for two weeks. the block after that most of my shifts are day shifts. however, as other posters stated above, the ED must be staffed 24/7 so you will most definitely be working weekends and holidays at some (many) point in your career. hope that helps! --sp
