Hi guys, I was thinking of switching my major from physical therapy to Optometry, but I am not sure if it's worth it. I find it interesting and I think that I would def. have the drive to do it, but I am going to be a second year now, and i messed up my first year badly, so I am trying to make up for it. So my question is do you think that even though my first year is messed up that I can still get into Grad school after 4 years if I pull my grades up ?

yes. if it is what you want, go for it.

OK... I'm a litte confused. By major...do you mean career choice? As in, "I wanted to be a physical therapist, but now I want to be an optometrist"? If that is what you meant... then yes, you can. Pull your grades up and show a solid upward trend in your GPA. If you are a freshman in college, you still have PLENTY of time to think about what you want to be. If optometry is interesting, try and do some shadowing to get an idea of what you would be getting into. Focus on getting good grades now... worry about the rest later!

Hi! Something to consider also is what you can possibly see yourself doing long term. I had considered PT at one point as well, and had taken classes preparing for that route until I later worked at a hospital as a rehab tech and found that I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It wasn't until later that I found out more about Optometry and shadowed Optometrists that I finally found my comfortable niche🙂
Shadowing an Optometrist is an awesome way to really get a feel for what you are getting yourself into, and many are more than happy to answer your questions about the field.
As for your classes, I think as long as you pull up your grades and finish strong in your last few years, you'll be fine. A lot of people have rocky 1st years in college, and your situation is not uncommon. If you received below a C- in some of your science classes, you might consider retaking and aceing them, since most Opt schools I know require their prereq classes to be a C or higher. Look into joining a Pre-Optometry Club if your college has one to prep you for the OAT, and balance the next few years with work or volunteer experience. That shows the schools you are more than just a gpa or oat score, but a well rounded individual. Hope that helps!
