Hi everyone,

I am definitely in need of advice because I am a bit confused concerning how it works when you apply to a specific track for an IM program. I am interested in applying for UPMC's Clinical Scientist Research Track, however I am concerned that since this track only takes 3 people/year and if I am rejected from this track, am I still considered for the regular categorical program or am I automatically out of the running for the program? If this were the case I would rather not apply because I am very interested in doing residency there.

Can anyone help clarify this for a confused soul! Thanks so much!

My sense is that you are free to apply for the other tracks and will still be considered for categorical, just make sure you have both checked on ERAS. I'm applying for the categorical and the global health. GL!

This depends on the program and you should definitely ask the program coordinator in a quick email (address is usually on ERAS or the program's website). In my experience, some programs will automatically "demote" you to the regular track if they don't interview you for the Research Pathway (I'm looking at you WashU), while others won't even offer you the opportunity if they reject you for the Research Pathway (how's it hangin' UCSF?). I got an interview for the Research Pathway from Pitt so I don't know what their practice is. Best to just fire off a quick email and find out for certain.

Thanks I will shoot them an email! Good to find out for sure!
