Hello All.
I have a question about NOva Southeastern Dental School in ft. laudie. I called them today and asked them their stats for the incomming class, and they were fairly high. I'm a Uf undergrad currently, and NOVA's scores are comparable to those of Florida's incommign class. Nova is supposed to be a PRivate schoool....
Does anyone know the difficulty of getting accepted into NOva, and if they accept pepe with low gpa's meaning.. 3.1 Sci 3.38 overall.
thanks

3.1 and 3.4 are not low..you'll be fine if you score well on the DAT's. Granted I don't know that much about Nova but from what I have seen I think I am giving you fairly accurate advice..

I think that NOVA's stats for last year were: about a 3.4-3.4 and 18-19 DAT. (somewhere around there). They used to be generally not too hard to get into, but from what I've heard...they are stepping it up. Still, they have to accept some lower GPA students because the higher GPA's will be going to UF. Good Luck!

When I interviewed there, Su Ann said that the GPAs on this years applications were very high. She indicated that applicants with a GPA near 3.0 to 3.1 would have a very difficult time getting a interview.

Sometimes true, but I think it's changing. I know UF has a teriffic reputation and a great basic science program, but when I applied to both schools, I asked the admissions committee "why should I go to UF over Nova?" they responded, "We're cheaper"

Hrm... interesting.

Applications this year are already quite numerous - something like in the >1000 range currently (please don't quote me on this #😀 ). Ouch... hahaha, thank goodness I got in when I did.

Did she say anything about students with those GPA's but with high DAT (20+) having a hard time getting interviews as well? Or is the GPA weighed heavier than the DAT?

She said that the number of applications this year was high. She estimated they'd have over 3000! Although she said it in all seriousness, I think she must have been exagerating. Then she said she was absolutely amazed with how many 20+ scores on the DAT she had seen, as well as, high GPAs. She followed that by saying that in previous years a 3.1 to 3.2 was typical, but that this year she expected the average to be close to 3.4, and that it would be difficult for applicants with a 3.0 to 3.1 GPA to earn an interview. She never made any comments about what affect a high DAT score would have on an application with a low GPA.

Spoke to Su-Ann today, she mentioned the AADSAS app number is around 1500 and secondaries are around 600. High numbers this year!

She asked me to help out at open house and give a speech to the students who are interested. If anybody is coming or is interested in coming to the open house, it's Sunday November 7... I will have to get back to you all of the time, but most are usually around 1pm.

Cheers!

I have heard of the high DAT scores coming in, but here are the stats for the Class of 2008:

Cumulative GPA: 3.52
Science GPA: 3.43
DAT AVG: 18.7
PAT AVG: 17.2
AVG AGE: 26
Number of Applicants via AADSAS: 2332
Number of Supplementary Applications: 1703
Florida Residents: 58
Out of state residents: 47

The NSU admissions committee loves well-rounded students... i.e. not just high GPA/DAT scores... those who know what to answer when they are asked "if you could be any car, what would it be and why?"

If your stats are in this range, you will do fine! They emphasize science GPA and TS DAT scores because they correlate with performance in dental school and the clinic. PAT and other classes are pluses, but these two factors do not correlate as well with performance in dental school (if at all).

Good luck to all applicants!

I got interviewed at Nova on October 13 and my stats weren't that great... GPA 3.30 DAT: 18AA, 19sci, 20PAT, with 3 recommendation letters, a published research and over 200 hours of observation. Hope this helps 👍

Mike- I'm going to the open house on Nov. 7....should we wear suits? What is the attire typically like? Thanks, see you then.

Hey mike, i hear you'll be giving a speech at the open house, this i got to see! My class is still raving about the speech you gave for Dr. Hottel. I'll make sure we all come out and cheer you on!

Liss,

Make sure you dress business-casual. While you can never over-dress, throw on something relaxed so that you can walk around campus and sit in a classroom for a while. Keep your suit nice and new for your interview 😉.
