Hey all, I have a buddy who is an ophthalmologist in Brazil . He is very bright. He gained acceptance into a public school , which , in Brazil, means he got amazing entrance scores. Getting into a public school there means you get a full ride. It's pretty much a scholarship.

So, he was considering coming to the states because he is getting unhappy with the economy there ( in case you didn't know, the exchange rate is now $1USD = $4 Brazilian. Could you guys tell me if you know what he would need to do to be able to practice in the US? Would he need to start are over or could he do something like checking to see if his credits transfer and sitting for the steps? Thanks for reading!

Pass step 1 and step 2, then apply for residency... He will not need to start over if he went to a 'reputable' schooling Brazil. It probably will be difficult to match into ophthal, so you should ask him if he will be ok being a PCP...

If his med school is in CA list of approved med school, he will be able to practice in any state.

A lot of international doctors do research for several years and then go into that institution's residency program

Thanks guys! Yea he went to federal university of São Paulo, so it's basically Harvard of that city. Lol. I'll look more into , but that's good news that he wouldn't have to start over completely. He works his nuts off and with the exchange rate he probably makes $40k a year.

Ophtho for a foreign grad is highly improbable if not impossible.

Yes, passing step 1 and 2 makes him eligible to apply to any specialty. Might have to "settle" for a primary care field, although an average Primary care doctor in the U.S. makes 4-5x more per year (higher U.S. cost of living to be considered).
