To all of you in Columbia:
Is it bad having classes with medical students? Do you feel you have to learn a lot of unneccessary stuff? Are the students generally happy there? Which one is the better dorm to live in? What is the Columbia ranking among other dental schools? Betwwen Columbia and Tufts which one should I choose?

mixed feelings... you do feel way overworked compared to those MDs... when you finish med classes at noonish, they get time to study... the DDS has to go to DDS classes...

Do you feel you have to learn a lot of unneccessary stuff?
no, but i think i've retained about 1% of what they've taught...ok maybe a little more than that...

Are the students generally happy there?
i think this depends on each person... and there's too many factors...but it's darn cold on the east coast

Which one is the better dorm to live in?
preference again... most people like towers

What is the Columbia ranking among other dental schools?
no such ranking exisit...

Betwwen Columbia and Tufts which one should I choose?
well...obviously I'm at Columbia, so if I answer this, it'll be biased 😛

Stargirl, you usually sound so up and pumped about Columbia. Today you seem a little negative!!?? Everyone says dental school is hell, and maybe you are just reacting honestly to the op. Sheri, there are a lot of Columbia posts on this forum from the past, you should research those as well.

well she didn't ask me personally, so i tried to state what other people think as well...

can't say everyone LOVES the med classes, nor can I say that everyone loves it here...

plus i think you're reading me wrong...it wasn't meant to be a negative post😀

but for me, med classes were great... I slept in a lot 😀
Dental school is hell (no matter where you go), but it's what you make of it...and for me, it wasn't all too bad 😀 I wouldn't change it for the world, I met the best people here...YOU LEARN SO MUCH and you are very overworked compared to the Med students during the first two years, columbia got me into my first choice residency (and got almost everyone in my class into their speciality of choice), Getting too much clinical experiences that I'm ready to graduate and move on... I have nothing to complain about. I am absolutely happy about the whole experience... BUT if i could change anything, it would be nice sunny weather ALL year long!

I think columbia is going down the drain now that they changed the school name and also the dental degree.

HAHAHA.....I was the last graduating class that they issued DDS to!! 👍

no, they just changed the name of the school, we're getting DDS also and OUR diploma will be the last to say SDOS!

i'm sure they're working on changing the degree to DMD, but that's just the rumor, and dr. d once said that if they do, anyone alum will have the option of staying w/ the DDS or DMD.

Changing the degree from DDS to DMD (at least in NY State) is a state issue and can't be done based on the school deciding to change it. It has to be a State board agreement to change All the NY State schools to DMD (that is Columbia, NYU, Stonybrook, and Buffalo).

That may happen over the next FEW years. But, looks like the general opinion is to go towards that change in the coming future.

The option to grant degrees in up to the university, but currently the NY Board of Regents only allows the DDS in NY. If/When they decide to change it, each school can decide at that time to issue different degrees. The process of changing the code is not difficult, but will need the support of the schools, alums, and NYSDA.
