Hi, I'm a pre-optometry student trying to get more informed about what it's like to be an optometrist.

What are some current issues/challenges that you guys (optometrists) have to face?

Increasing tuition costs, decreasing reimbursements, sales competition, opposing legislation, oversupply due to uncontrolled creation of new schools... That should give you a good starting point.
