Question for current Texas Tech students

This is probably a bit off-topic, but what cell phone company would you recommend?

I know my sprint phone worked well, but would you recommend someone else over them? Cingular or T-Mobile?

All will work fine. Cingular does have a discount for being a Texas Tech student (10-15% if I remember correctly). T-Mobile does not have an office in Amarillo so your number through them would actually be a Lubbock number (not a local call from Amarillo).

Thanks, I did not know about the discount, I'll have to check into that. That's actually one of the better things about being a Tech student, discounts all around, especially with apartments

I just saw this post and eNOS pretty much answered your question...but I have T-Mobile and you do get excellent service here, but as eNOS stated there is no local T-Mobile store. I have never found this to be a problem, except if something should happen to your phone and you don't have a landline then you're pretty much screwed. Most people I know don't change their cellphone number when they move (or at least if you move as much as I do), so the number being based out of Lubbock wouldn't be as much of a problem.

There are several that are within a mile or 2 from campus. I can think of 5 off of the top of my head. Renaissance is the closest. I've lived here for my first 2 years- it is a bit more pricey then some of the other surrounding ones, but if you've ever lived in a metropolitan area then you will think it is dirt cheap (for me i think it is). I paid $590 for 750 sq. feet and it literally takes 2 minutes to drive to school. You could even bike or walk to campus if you want. These apts are about 3 years old so they are still in good shape. I'm pretty sure that the rent has gone up for next year b/c they are trying to keep up with a newer complex. There is an apt complex that is actually only a year old called the Winchester which is pricier then Renaissance...I'm not quite sure by how much, but I know that it's in the 600 range and you're not getting as much space for your money. There were a TON of P1's that lived there last year (about 30). I knew of a couple P2's that were also there. I really don't know much about them. I've been inside one of the apts and they are very nice.
Willow Glen is just down the street from me and it's definitely quite a bit older, but cheaper. I've heard mixed reviews on them. I have a good friend that moved there and he wasn't very impressed with it..but I think he's just going to stay there b/c it's so cheap. Huntington Point is right next to Willow Glen. They are also cheaper but they are fairly nice...one of the P1's on here lives there...txranger. I'm sure if you have any specific questions about that one you can ask her.
Quail Creek is a good deal. Not too old and a reasonable price. A lot of students also live there. Several of my friends live there and I think they are pretty nice.
I lied...there's one more I can think of but it is not within a couple of miles. But here in Amarillo nothing is too far. They are building a new apt complex that is the sister of the Winchester,...they are called the Remington...? Other then the name I can't tell you anything else aside from it being located off of a road called Soncey..it would probably take you under 10 minutes to drive to school.
Aside from those listed I don't know much about any other complexes. Some people are scattered at random places.

My wife to be and I are moving to the Quail Creek aparments in a few weeks. 1000+ sq. ft. 2b 2bath, for 735 a month and washer dryer in unit... hard to beat, plus it's like 2 minutes from school.

Good luck with the search Rosie, I'd look at the Winchester too, I looked at them the day after the interview and it was really nice

You don't have to dress "professional" unless you have a lab that requires it (which won't be until your 2nd year). Otherwise jeans and a t-shirt are the usual around here.

I meant to mention Quail Creek (can't believe I forgot). They are very nice and close to school as well. A lot of students also live there and it's very affordable. I would actually highly recommend them, I have several friends that live there who haven't had any real complaints.
