I am still wondering whether or not to take the USMLE in addition to the COMLEX. I am not planning on applying to any top tier programs (i.e. Harvard, Duke, JHU), but I would like to know if anybody knows which programs would be likely to accept DO students without having to take the USMLE, assuming a good score on the COMLEX at any tier. Also, if anybody has any information on Texas programs, I would greatly appreciate it.

As a DO student currently interviewing at Radiology residencies, I was told a few times that the single best thing I did at improving my chances for an interview was to take the USMLE. In my opinion, it would be a great investment to increase your chances of securing a residency. From an outsider's perspective, it appears that anesthesia is growing in popularity.

I totally agree with rad. I have been told the same exact thing on almost every interview. Take the test and you will be considered equal (assuming you have no gaping faults in your transcripts). Take the test!!! I landed a view at JHU and I'm positive my USMLE score had no small part in it.

Hey,

You need to take the USMLE. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by not taking the test. It's your future. Why wouldn't you put yourself in the best position possible? I've had multiple residency directors tell me that they were glad I took the USMLE. Makes it easier for them.

Howdy,

Did you take only Step 1 before interviewing?

I took both Steps before my interviews. In my case, I wanted to show an improvement in my scores. I didn't think much of it at the time, but a residency director told me that he'd prefer if students took both Steps before interviews. Shows that you have balls. Not scared of taking that chance. Take it as you wish. I never really thought about it that way.
