Question for Georgetown SMP Graduates (or anyone currently in the program)

I was wondering how many people in the program end up re-taking the mcat in august (while they are enrolled in the program)?

I have a 28 on the mcat and will be starting the SMP program this August...and want to re apply while I'm in the program....Should I retake the mcat this august??

I applied to med schools this year with a 28/3.5amcas gpa and had no luck and therefore I am attending georgetown in august ....so basically I'm just wondering if many people apply with their old mcat scores or re take the mcat before applying to med school again.

any information or suggestions would be helpful!

yeah I actually had a variation on that question too....I am in a similiar situation, except if I don't get in during the upcoming cycle my MCAT will be too old to apply again (Aug 2004). I dont want to retake it because my current score is good, but I dont want to be SOL if I have to apply a 3rd time.

Unfortunatly, Georgetown is one school that has a 3-year cutoff so if you want to apply there this year (which you should since 20-30 SMPers end up being accepted there) you need to take the MCAT this April or August.

Sorry if my question sound stupid: So that means my August 2004 MCAT scores is expired for 2007 matriculation?

Yes, it sucks. I have to take the stupid test again this August if I dont get in this cycle.

no they dont! they would be good until 2008. They have a 3 year life.

No. A score from August of 2004 is still valid at the vast majority of schools. If you were to apply in June of 2007 for entry in Fall of 2008, then you would need to retake, but any given MCAT is valid for three application cycles at almost every school (and I'm pretty sure that includes Georgetown). So for August 2004, it would be good for applying in 2004 (for 2005 entry), 2005 (for 2006 entry; i.e. the current application cycle) and 2006 (for 2007 entry).

This is wrong. I just checked on 4 schools websites that say they only take scores from three or less years ago. Then they state that for this app cycle for 2006 admissions, they take 2003, 2004, 2005 test dates. So next year they would accept 2004,2005,2006. 👍

I really don't think that's accurate. The 2006-2007 MSAR says, for Georgetown med, "Oldest MCAT Considered: 2003". It says that for the majority of schools, although almost as many seem to accept 2002 scores, and some even older.

So, for this coming year, 2004 scores are perfectly acceptable at 99% of schools.

i'll answer it! i think a handful of people end up retaking in august, before smp really starts up. i mean, if you're ready for the exam, i'd say go for it. your applications are going to be held aside by schools anyway, because they'll be waiting for your smp grades. so, in your case, taking the august mcat is not going to delay your apps. also, the mcat isn't really going to interfere with smp. the year i was a physio, the august mcat fell on the saturday between orientation and the start of classes. anyway, best of luck.

I checked WV SOM, Vanderbilt, UCI, UCLA, and Georgetown websites. All of them said an August 2004 MCAT would be fine for the upcoming cycle. I did not speak to anyone thought. I checked Drexel, however, and they only have a two year window, so Aug 2004 is nixed there.

It says two years prior to the application. So 2004 will be fine there. You would be applying in 2006. So 2004 is golden there like everywhere else. I have never seen less than a three year window and have seen up to 5 years at some state schools.
