Hey SDN'rs! I have been immersed in stressful stuff for a while and haven't had time to check in to the forum. I am now living in the greater Raleigh area, and I have a question for those of you living in this area.

I am looking for work here, and was wondering if any of you know of any LA vets who might be looking for an assistant when they go on calls. I did this for an equine vet as a volunteer while living in Colorado, and thought, "This is such a cool job! If only I didn't have classes." Well, now I don't have classes, so I could actually get a job like this. And because my resume is all veterinary related, it is proving pretty tough to find a job that isn't in vet med (e.g. human healthcare)...which is fine by me since I love vet med!

If anyone has ideas on who I could contact, I would really appreciate it. I don't have contacts in the North Carolina vet world (except through SDN).

Advice welcome! On any jobs, actually. 😳

Hi! I currently live about 100 miles from there and do not know as many vets, but I do know Apex Veterinary Hospital. They have a few LA vets and I am friends with someone who used to do Equine there. Anyway, Their number is (919) 362-8879. They do Equine, Bovine, and Camelid, but predominantly Equine I think. I will be moving down there in a year when I transfer to NCSU so I am not too much help right now. But give Apex a try! http://www.apexequinevet.com/
Also, many of my AQHA showing friends use Triangle Equine down in that area. I don't know too much about them- here is their site http://triangleequine.com/.
I don't know if either of these places are hiring, but it's a starting place!
Good luck!

I second Apex Veterinary. I know a few people who use them and they are great! I am actually trying to set up a ride along with one of the vets for late next month. Also, try Large Animal Veterinary Services with Dr. Rednour. He comes highly recommended as well. I wanted to shadow with him, but he is all booked up!

You could also try 3h veterinary in New Hill/Apex and Neuse River. Google should be able to get you their contact info. If you're willIng to drive down to Southern Pines, there are a ton of practices. It's about an hour and fifteen minutes from my parents' house in Raleigh, less from Cary or Apex, but an easy drive from anywhere. Down there are Southern Pines Equine Associates, Carolina Equine and Hassinger Equine, plus a lot of smaller practices.

There is also a Carolina Equine in Roxboro (I think?) that would be a manageable drive if you were closer to Durham.

Hope this helps!

Also I found that most small animal jobs are posted on craigslist under the Healthcare listings.

Unfortunately the glut of pre-vets and vet students at ncsu can make job searching in this area a little tough, but be persistent and polite and you should be ok!

Thanks for the insights, everybody. I'll actually be living in Hillsborough, so Southern Pines would be way too far. I'm moving next to a farm, so I'll ask my new neighbors about their vet too. I'm hoping there are some LA vets north of Raleigh somewhere.

That's true, although I was hoping that students wouldn't be able to be a ride-along assistant because of their class schedule. The search continues!

Neuse River does not pay, and they are pretty booked up for the rest of the summer. I had remembered calling another equine vet in September and they told me there was a 6 month waiting list just to volunteer.

And yes finding a job is hard, a lot of people want full timers so you might be all set. On the other hand I am planning for my time back to school and know I will be devoting my time to my master's program so I have had no luck whatsoever in the job department.

Hmm...so you probably need to stay north/west of Raleigh -- driving through or around Raleigh during rush hour wouldn't be much fun!

I am pretty sure that there is a mixed animal practice in Rougemont at Quail Roost...but when I google, it looks like they've become entirely small animal (if they were every mixed). You might want to call Quail Roost though and see who they use.

This clinic is near Reidsville -- about 30 minutes from Hillsborough. I met one of their new interns and heard one of their doctors speak at the NC State Equine Health Symposium. Both seemed really nice!

I have also heard great things about this vet from the vets I worked with in Southern Pines:

Dr. Mansmann is in Chapel Hill -- he is fabulous and really helpful -- and has had some incredible experiences. He runs a podiatry/lameness clinic. I'm not sure if this is his official website, but it at least has his contact info.

Just FYI, the clinic where I worked during my "gap year" wasn't hiring when I dropped off my application - but I still ended up with a job. I think it's still worth contacting places even if they aren't advertising positions. 🙂

I'll keep brainstorming!

Not exactly what you're looking for, but very p/t and really awesome -- you can volunteer as an animal caretaker 1 day/wk at Carolina Tiger Rescue (just google it). They have tigers, lions, binturongs, caracals, and several other Carnivora at the sanctuary. There is a veterinary clinic on site but it's not used all the time, though if there is a medical issue while you're on site the vet will let experienced people observe.

I consider this organization one of the perks of the triangle area.
