I have a friend who is starting her 3rd yr. Her performance in her first 1.5 years was lackluster (I dont know her exact GPA) but she says she didn't fail/remidiate anything. Her class rank is in the middle of the pack. She wants to know if there is still a chance to match into an OMFS residency if she did well on her boards (expecting 90+).
I know her very well and she seems to have sorted herself out in the latter part of her 2nd yr and for the boards.

As far as the residency stuff is concerned I dont really know much about it so I told her to involve herself in a lot of research and maybe do a 1yr OS internship before applying.
What do you think guys?

AMMD:

I am not an OMS resident, I am a second-year dental student. I, too, am aiming to specialize in OMS. I can't wait to get my NBDE Part 1 scores/report back in 4 more weeks.

At any rate, I guess I know some about applying to an OMS residency. For your friend, her chances are slim unless she kicked ass on the Part 1 boards (90+).

Ranking is very important for initial screening. Although many OMS programs will thoroughly go through applications, but having the numbers (GPA, class rank, and NBDE Part 1 scores) is crucial to have a better chance in getting an interview and matching.

Most likely in her circumstances, she will have to do a year of GPR or a year of OMS internship (like you said) to better her chances.

My suggestion for her:

1) hope that she did well on the board Part 1 (90+) as we will see in the first week of September

2) get involved in research and present posters at the AAOMS conferences (huge marketing for yourself as an applicant if you did this)

3) Increase her class rank as much as she can, by this time (her 3rd year), she'll have to get straight "A"s to budge her rank!

4) have her do couple of OMS externships (ones that are 1 month long) from now to when she graduates. The more externships you have the better your application will look!

If she recieves 90+ on the Part 1 board, then her chances will look a little bit better. If she only gets in the 80s, then a year of GPR or OMS intership will be in her destiny.

Again, I'm just sharing what I know, but anything is possible. I communicate with OMS directors around the country and I feel strongly that NBDE part 1 board score is now more important than anything for her situation.

Last note, there are very few OMS resident lurking on SDN, Ewsmith1 was the last one on here. Maybe you can summon or PM him!

yah-e thanks for the response man. Seems very informative. The only thing about the rank situation is, I really dont know how far up it will go in the last 2 yrs. Usually at our school, the rank list pretty much stays put after the first 2 years. She seems pretty confident about the boards and I hope they count for something. Anyways thanks for the info and hope to get some more.
